Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati on March 12, 2026, Sarma stated that the effort isn’t merely a battle for vote share, but a fight to preserve identity. Addressing Allegations and Defamation Suits

Sarma as well addressed recent allegations made against him by Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi. India Today reported that Sarma challenged Gogoi to pursue legal action if he believed the claims were false, referencing previous defamation suits filed against Gogoi.

The dispute stems from Sarma’s earlier claim that Gogoi was a “Pakistani agent,” based on a 2013 visit to Pakistan and alleged discrepancies in visa permissions. Gogoi, in turn, accused Sarma and his family of possessing a significant amount of land across the northeast.
