Nigerian entrepreneurs and early-stage business owners can now apply for the second edition of the Economic Community of West African States Startup Awards, which features $65,000 in total cash prizes. According to the ECOWAS Commission, the regional initiative aims to identify, celebrate, and support innovative startups while driving digital entrepreneurship and economic integration across West Africa.
Key Dates and Programme Timeline for 2026
Applications for the awards opened on August 3, 2026, and will close on August 31, 2026, according to official updates from the ECOWAS Commission. Following the application window, selected participants will take part in virtual masterclasses scheduled for September 21 to September 25, 2026. The programme culminates in a physical event and regional finals in Abuja, Nigeria, running from September 28 to September 30, 2026.
Prize Breakdown and Beneficiary Sectors
The competition targets 60 startups selected from 12 ECOWAS member states. Eligible businesses operate across six specific sectors: EdTech and Skills Development, FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech and Food Systems, CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation, and Tourism, Hospitality, and TravelTech.
According to programme guidelines reported by Leadership, the cash prizes are distributed among the top three regional winners:
- Winner: $30,000
- First Runner-Up: $20,000
- Second Runner-Up: $15,000
Beyond capital, successful startups secure regional visibility, access to investor deal rooms, networking opportunities with policymakers and development partners, and digital tools including computers, accessories, and software. Winners also gain entry into a six-month post-award acceleration and mentorship programme.
Eligibility Requirements and Application Process
To qualify, applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS member state—including Nigeria—and operate a startup registered and based within the region. Businesses must have a minimum of two years of operational history, a functional product or service, and clear evidence of market traction or scalability.
Applicants must submit their materials through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards portal. Required documentation includes:

Selection Process and Evaluation Criteria
The selection mechanism operates in two distinct stages. First, national selections occur where each ECOWAS member state nominates half of its allocated slots, while open public applications fill the remaining positions. Finalists then travel to Abuja for the regional finals, pitching their enterprises before an independent jury of industry experts, investors, and policy stakeholders.
According to contest evaluation guidelines, submissions are scored across several core metrics:
- Problem clarity and solution fit: 20%
