Hyundai and Kia Launch MobED Robot Platform and Alliance
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have begun domestic sales of MobED, an advanced mobile robot platform, and simultaneously launched the MobED Alliance at the 2026 Smart Factory and Automation Industry Exhibition (AW2026) in Seoul. This initiative marks a significant step towards commercializing practical robotics solutions.
What is MobED?
MobED is a tiny, highly scalable mobile platform equipped with an innovative wheel drive system. Its unique eccentric structure, based on four independently driven DnL (Drive-and-Lift) mechanisms, allows it to navigate challenging terrains effectively. The platform’s scalability enables flexible integration of various “Top Modules” tailored to specific industry needs, making it suitable for applications like outdoor delivery, patrol duties, research, and video shooting Hyundai.
The MobED Alliance: A Four-Party Cooperation
The MobED Alliance operates as a collaborative framework involving Hyundai Motor and Kia’s Robotics Lab, domestic parts suppliers, robot solution companies, and related organizations Chosun. Hyundai and Kia’s Robotics Lab are responsible for the platform’s development and core technology. Ten parts suppliers, including Hyundai Transys and SL, will handle the production and supply of key components like sensors, electronics, and batteries. Five robot solution companies, such as LS Mtron Automation and Gaon Robotics, will focus on industry-specific service configuration and on-site deployment. Organizations like the Korea AI & Robotics Industry Association will support demonstration and deployment environment development Sedaily.
Ecosystem-Driven Commercialization
Hyundai and Kia plan to adopt an ecosystem-driven commercialization strategy, providing complete robotics solutions to the market through specialized partners rather than solely selling the MobED platform. Robot solution companies are developing ten types of industry-tailored ‘Top Modules’ for applications including logistics delivery, patrol drone stations, and advertising signage Sedaily.
AW2026 Debut and Demonstrations
At AW2026, Hyundai Motor and Kia unveiled the mass-production model of MobED for the first time in Korea and hosted purchase consultations. A 180 m2 experience booth showcased MobED’s mobility by navigating challenging terrains – including drains, curves, ramps, and curbs – that typically hinder conventional autonomous mobile robots Sedaily. Visitors experienced manual driving, autonomous driving, and the usability of the top module through themed experience zones.
Future Outlook
Hyun Dong-jin, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor and Kia’s Robotics Lab, stated that MobED, already recognized for its innovation, has evolved into an even more advanced robot solution through this alliance. Hyundai and Kia aim to enhance the competitiveness of the Korean robot industry and expand the physical AI ecosystem in collaboration with key partners Hyundai.
