New Delhi hosted the inaugural India AI Impact Summit and Expo from February 16-20, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam. Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s expanding computing power and data centers as foundational elements for a thriving AI ecosystem, inviting global data residency within the nation. He stated on X (formerly Twitter), “The theme of the Summit is Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya or welfare for all, happiness for all, reflecting our shared commitment to harnessing Artificial Intelligence for human-centric progress.”

The summit has drawn participation from global tech leaders, including executives from OpenAI and Google, amplifying the voices of developing nations in the ongoing discussions surrounding AI governance. Day 2, February 17, 2026, focused on applied AI, social equity, and featured panels with UN’s Amandeep Singh Gill and NITI Aayog’s Amitabh Kant.

Focus on Sovereign AI and Scalable Solutions

The summit is pushing for the development of sovereign AI models, democratized access to AI technologies, and scalable solutions. Sanjay Malhotra, a central banker, urged attendees to proactively engage with AI, stating, “AI is happening, it is relentless, if you don’t do AI, AI will be done to you… Set a personal target of learning how to use three AI platforms within the next three months.”

Logistical Issues and Initial Challenges

Despite the ambitious scope of the event, the opening day was met with criticism regarding logistical challenges. Attendees reported long queues, overcrowding, and confusion due to vague instructions and inadequate signage. Abrupt evacuations for VIP security sweeps caused disruption, and some speakers awaiting their sessions on Tuesday experienced confirmation delays.
