Indonesia to Receive Second A400M Transport Aircraft This Month

Indonesia’s Defense Ministry announced that the second Airbus A400M transport aircraft is expected to arrive by the end of March 2026. The aircraft will join the first A400M, which was delivered on November 3, 2025, bolstering the Indonesian Air Force’s capabilities.

Strengthening Air Defense and Transport Capabilities

According to Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, Head of the Defense Information Bureau, the addition of the second A400M will significantly enhance the Air Force’s ability to safeguard Indonesia’s air territory. Antara News reports the aircraft is currently en route from Seville, Spain.

A400M Acquisition and Future Plans

The contract for the two A400M aircraft was originally signed in 2021 by President Prabowo Subianto, then serving as defense minister, during the Dubai Airshow. At the same event, a letter of intent was similarly signed for the potential procurement of four additional A400M aircraft. Airbus confirms Indonesia is now the tenth operator of the A400M.

Versatile Capabilities of the A400M

The A400M is a heavy transport aircraft designed for a variety of missions, including cargo transport, aerial refueling, humanitarian aid, and combat operations. It can carry a maximum payload of up to 37 tonnes. Airbus also notes the potential integration of a roll-on/roll-off modular firefighting kit, capable of dropping up to 20,000 liters of retardant or water, to bolster Indonesia’s wildfire response capabilities.

Regional Significance and Previous Deployments

Indonesia is the tenth country worldwide to operate the A400M, and one of four in Asia, alongside Malaysia, Turkey, and Kazakhstan. Antara News highlights that the aircraft was previously used for humanitarian missions in Lombok and Palu following major disasters in 2018, demonstrating its versatility in responding to emergencies.
