iOS 27: Apple Prioritizes Performance and Stability with Gradual Liquid Glass Improvements

Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 release is shaping up to be a significant under-the-hood update, focusing on improving the quality and performance of the operating system rather than introducing sweeping visual changes. This strategy, likened to Apple’s “Snow Leopard” update for macOS, signals a shift towards refinement and optimization, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

A Focus on Code Cleanup and Optimization

Following the substantial design overhaul introduced with iOS 26 and the rollout of Liquid Glass across its platforms, Apple is prioritizing streamlining and cleaning up its operating systems. Years of updates have accumulated code fragments that no longer serve a purpose, leading to slowdowns and bugs. Engineers are actively “hunting for bloat to cut, bugs to eliminate and any opportunity to meaningfully boost performance and overall quality” [9to5Mac]. Liquid Glass: Incremental Improvements, Not a Revolution

Despite some user reservations regarding readability, Liquid Glass is expected to remain a core design element in iOS 27. Even as the design lead for Liquid Glass, Alan Dye, departed Apple for Meta in late 2023, his replacement, Steve Lemay, isn’t expected to initiate a radical redesign. Gurman reports that current internal versions of iOS 27 and macOS 27 “don’t reflect major design changes” [9to5Mac]. Apple anticipates “years of gradual improvements” to the feature.

Potential for Enhanced Liquid Glass Customization

Apple may introduce a system-wide slider allowing users to fine-tune the intensity of the Liquid Glass effect. Development efforts during iOS 26 explored this functionality, successfully implementing it for the lock screen clock but encountering engineering challenges when attempting to extend it across the entire system, including app folders, the home screen, and navigation bars [9to5Mac]. If these challenges are overcome, it could significantly alter user perception of Liquid Glass.

AI and Foldable iPhone Upgrades Likewise Expected

While performance and stability are the primary focus, iOS 27 is still expected to include new features, including advancements in AI capabilities and upgrades related to the anticipated foldable iPhone [9to5Mac].

The shift towards prioritizing quality and performance in iOS 27 reflects Apple’s recognition of the importance of a stable and efficient operating system, even as it continues to innovate with new features.
