Iowa Women’s Tennis Defeats Arizona in Close Match at Red Blue Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team secured a 4-3 victory over the University of Arizona Wildcats on Saturday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, marking their first win against a ranked opponent this season. The Hawkeyes’ record now stands at 6-4 overall this spring.

Doubles Play Sets the Tone

Iowa dominated the doubles competition, claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Karissa Ghigiarelli and Maria Garlia defeated Pia Kranholdt and Sally Xu 6-2 on court three. Tereza Dejnozkova and Emma Tothová edged Tanvi Narendran and Danielle Tuhten 6-4 on court two, improving their Red Blue Invitational record to 2-0. The decisive point came from No. 33 Daianne Hayashida and Mia Mack, who defeated Martyna Ostrzygalo and Ciara Moore 6-3 on court one.

Singles Competition Sees Back-and-Forth Action

The singles matches proved to be a closely contested affair. Arizona leveled the score with Tanvi Narendran defeating Pia Kranholdt 6-1, 6-2 on court five. Iowa quickly responded as Sally Xu defeated Karissa Ghigiarelli 6-1, 6-1 on court six.

Arizona regained the lead with Maria Garcia defeating Emma Tothová 6-4, 6-0 on court four, and Martyna Ostrzygalo adding a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 67 Mia Mack on court one – Mack’s first singles loss of the spring season.

The Hawkeyes fought back with Daianne Hayashida defeating Ciara Moore in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. The match-clinching point came from Tereza Dejnozkova, who won a three-set battle against Danielle Tuhten 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, securing Iowa’s third consecutive win.
