Apple Unveils iPhone 17e: Enhanced Value and Performance

Apple today introduced the iPhone 17e, the newest addition to its iPhone 17 family, offering a compelling blend of performance and affordability. The launch addresses key consumer desires, particularly around storage capacity and wireless charging capabilities.

Doubled Base Storage and Fresh Color Option

The iPhone 17e maintains the $599 price point of its predecessor but doubles the base storage to 256GB, effectively increasing value by $100 compared to the previous generation. The phone is available in three matte finishes: black, white, and a new Soft Pink.

A19 Chip and Enhanced Efficiency

Powering the iPhone 17e is Apple’s latest A19 chip, built on a 3-nanometer process. While utilizing a “binned” version of the chip with a 4-core GPU (compared to the 5-core version in standard iPhone 17 models), it incorporates Neural Accelerators within each GPU core to enhance Apple Intelligence capabilities. Apple claims the 6-core CPU is up to twice as fast as the iPhone 11. The device also features the C1X modem, Apple’s custom cellular technology, which is designed to use 30% less energy than the modem found in the iPhone 16 Pro, contributing to all-day battery life despite maintaining the same 26-hour video playback capacity as the previous model.

Durability and Design Improvements

The iPhone 17e features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display protected by Ceramic Shield 2, offering three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation and reduced glare. The customizable Action button, first introduced in the iPhone 16e, is also included.

Advanced Camera Capabilities

The camera system centers around a 48MP Fusion lens. While lacking a dedicated zoom lens, it leverages the high-resolution sensor to create an “optical-quality” 2x Telephoto effect. The iPhone 17e introduces “next-generation portraits” with automatic recognition of people, dogs, and cats, and allows users to convert regular photos into portraits post-capture. It supports 4K Dolby Vision video recording at 60 fps and includes new wind noise reduction technology.

MagSafe Integration

A highly requested feature, MagSafe is now available on the iPhone 17e, enabling magnetic attachment for chargers, wallets, and other accessories. It supports 15W Qi2 wireless charging, an improvement over the 7.5W charging on the iPhone 16e, though it doesn’t reach the 25W speeds of the flagship iPhone 17.

Software and Safety Features

The iPhone 17e launches with iOS 26, featuring “Liquid Glass” design elements and a suite of Apple Intelligence tools, including Live Translation in Messages and Visual Intelligence. The device is equipped with an estimated 8GB of RAM to support these AI features. Safety features such as Emergency SOS via satellite, Roadside Assistance via satellite, and crash detection remain integral to the iPhone 17e experience.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone 17e is priced at $599 for the 256GB model, with a 512GB option also available. Pre-orders begin Wednesday, March 4, at 6:15 a.m. PST, and the device will be available starting Wednesday, March 11. Trade-in offers are available, with up to $599 credit for an iPhone 13 and up to $400 for an iPhone 11. The phone will be available in over 70 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, China, India, and Japan. Apple is expanding its transition to eSIM-only devices, with the iPhone 17e being eSIM-only in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and several other markets.
