Trae Young Ejected in Wizards Debut Before Playing a Minute

Before even stepping onto the court for a game, Washington Wizards guard Trae Young received his first ejection as a member of the team. The unusual incident occurred during a game against the Houston Rockets on Monday, March 2, 2026, as reported by The New York Times.

The Ejection

The ejection stemmed from an altercation on the court after Rockets forward Tari Eason shoved Wizards guard Jamir Watkins without a foul being called. When a foul was eventually called on the other side of the court, a larger scuffle broke out. Technical fouls were assessed to four players – Eason, Watkins, Sharife Cooper, and unexpectedly, Young.

Young was ejected for leaving the bench and approaching an official during the altercation. NBA rules strictly prohibit players leaving the bench during on-court conflicts, a rule that has led to significant suspensions in the past.

Young’s Reaction

Despite the unusual circumstances, Young appeared to seize the ejection in stride, posting a lighthearted message on social media assuring Wizards fans that such incidents would be rare.

Previous Ejection

This isn’t Young’s first ejection. Last season, he was ejected from a Play-In Tournament game against the Orlando Magic after receiving two technical fouls – one for throwing the ball at an official and another for kicking it. Referee James Williams explained after that game that Young was ejected for “making a mockery of the game.”

Impact on Team Dynamics

Whereas the ejection was unconventional, it may have earned Young respect in the Wizards locker room for defending a teammate, even before officially playing a game for the team. His official debut is scheduled for Thursday.
