Iran Claims Missile Strike on USS Abraham Lincoln Amidst Escalating Middle East Tensions
TEHERAN – Iran announced on Wednesday that its forces launched a barrage of cruise missiles at the US aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, as conflict in the Middle East nears its fourth week. The claim comes amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts, led by the Donald Trump administration, to secure a month-long ceasefire through a 15-point plan .
Details of the Alleged Attack
According to the Iranian military, the Qader cruise missile, a land-based anti-ship missile, successfully targeted the USS Abraham Lincoln, forcing the carrier to alter its course. Navy Chief Admiral Shahram Irani stated, “The movements of the carrier group are being continuously monitored… And as soon as this enemy fleet enters the range of our missile systems, it will be the target of a devastating attack by the Iranian Navy.”
Iran’s semi-official news agency Fars released a video purportedly showing the launch of the Qader missiles . This marks the second claim by Iran of striking the USS Abraham Lincoln in recent days.
Regional Context and Ongoing Conflict
The current conflict began on February 28 with a joint US and Israeli air attack on Iran. The ensuing war has rapidly escalated, encompassing multiple nations in the Middle East – including Israel, Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia – and causing significant disruption to the global economy, notably a surge in oil prices.
Despite the ongoing military activity, diplomatic channels remain open, with efforts underway to facilitate communication between the warring parties. Though, public statements regarding the progress of these talks have been contradictory.
Impact on Civilians
The conflict is taking a toll on civilians throughout the region. A resident of Tehran, Shayan, 40, described a sense of helplessness, stating, “There’s petrol, water, and electricity. But there’s a sense of helplessness among all of us. We don’t know what to do, and there’s really nothing we can do.”
USS Abraham Lincoln’s Recent Movements
The USS Abraham Lincoln recently returned to a naval base in Crete, Greece, after participating in the initial attacks on Iran . It had been operating alongside the USS Gerald R. Ford in those operations.
