President Donald Trump has walked back his earlier criticisms of Australia after the country offered asylum to five members of the Iranian women’s national soccer team. The players had faced potential punishment upon their return to Iran for not singing the national anthem during a recent match.

From Criticism to Commendation

Earlier on Monday, Trump warned of “grave consequences” if Australia were to “force” the players to return to Iran, calling it a “terrible humanitarian mistake.” He directly addressed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, urging him to grant asylum and offering the U.S. As an alternative if Australia declined. Politico reported on these initial statements.

But, after learning that Australia had already offered and five players had accepted asylum, Trump shifted his tone. He posted on social media congratulating Albanese for “doing a very excellent job” and acknowledged that the situation was “rather delicate.” USA Today detailed this change in stance.

Players’ Concerns and Asylum Offers

Some team members reportedly expressed a desire to return to Iran due to safety concerns for their families, including threats if they did not return. However, none of the players are being forced to return against their will. USA Today confirmed this information, citing a source familiar with the matter.

The Australian foreign ministry had offered asylum to all members of the team, and five, including the team captain, have accepted. Al Jazeera too reported on this development.

FIFPRO’s Concerns and Previous Protests

FIFPRO, the global players’ union, had previously expressed serious concerns for the team, as they were labeled “wartime traitors” by Iranian hardliners for refusing to sing the national anthem before a game. Al Jazeera highlighted these earlier concerns.

The team had also faced protests upon their departure, with supporters blocking their bus and urging them to seek protection. YouTube provided coverage of these protests.

Trump stated that five players had been “taken care of” and that the remaining players were on their way. He acknowledged Albanese was “on it!” regarding the situation.
