Israel Destroys Litani River Bridges, Escalating Lebanon Offensive Against Hezbollah

The escalation follows a Hezbollah attack that killed an Israeli civilian on Sunday morning and comes amid growing concerns over regional instability.
Strategic Importance of the Litani River
The Litani River serves as a crucial geographical boundary in southern Lebanon, with bridges spanning it providing vital links between the south and the rest of the country. Destroying these bridges aims to disrupt Hezbollah’s logistical capabilities and restrict the flow of personnel and arms, according to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. Israel Today reports that the IDF began destroying bridges on March 13th, with two more destroyed on March 18th.
Escalation Following Civilian Death
The Israeli actions were prompted by a Hezbollah attack on Sunday morning that resulted in the death of a 61-year-old Israeli man in Misgav Am, a kibbutz bordering Lebanon. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it targeted Israeli soldiers.
Demolition of Villages and Displacement
In addition to targeting bridges, Defense Minister Katz has ordered the IDF to accelerate the demolition of homes in southern Lebanese villages, mirroring tactics previously employed in Gaza. The Jewish Edition reports this move is intended to eliminate terrorist infrastructure. Over 1 million Lebanese citizens – nearly 20 percent of the population – have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict, with Lebanese health authorities reporting over 1,000 deaths, including 118 children, since March 2nd.
Humanitarian Concerns and Local Perspectives
Lotfallah Daher, a photojournalist in Marjayoun, southern Lebanon, described a dire situation, recalling similar disruptions during the 2006 conflict. He noted that villages have sufficient supplies for several weeks but expressed concern over the potential for increased casualties. “Grenades and rockets land around us all the time,” Daher stated, adding that a local priest was recently killed in a rocket attack.
Ceasefire Breakdown and Regional Context
Whereas a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was established in November 2024, Israel continued attacks and occupied areas in southern Lebanon. The resumption of Hezbollah attacks against Israel followed the joint US-Israel military action against Iran on February 28th.
Continued Operations and Evacuation Orders
The IDF has stated it will continue to allow the evacuation of Lebanese residents south of the Litani River for their protection, following an order issued on March 4th. Defense Minister Katz affirmed Israel’s determination to prevent a return to the pre-October 7th security situation, emphasizing the commitment to protecting Israeli residents in the north.
