Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol Sentenced to Life in Prison

Seoul, South Korea – Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of rebellion for his actions in December 2024. The verdict was delivered on February 19, 2026, as supporters gathered outside the Seoul Central District Court according to the Associated Press.

Martial Law Declaration and Impeachment

Yoon Suk-yeol was ousted from office following a controversial attempt to circumvent an opposition-controlled legislature. On December 3, 2024, he declared martial law and deployed troops to surround the National Assembly as reported by AP News. The judge presiding over the case determined that Yoon mobilized military and police forces in an illegal effort to seize the Assembly, arrest politicians, and establish unchecked power for a “considerable” time.

Political Reactions to the Sentencing

The sentencing has sparked strong reactions from across the political spectrum. Jeong Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized the life sentence as “a grossly inadequate ruling that runs counter to the public’s sense of justice” according to Yonhap Infomax. Jeong argued that the maximum penalty – the death penalty – should have been imposed, given the severity of the charges. He further stated that the ruling represented a setback for those who demanded Yoon’s impeachment and removal from office.

Jeong Cheong-rae also indicated the Democratic Party’s commitment to pursuing further investigation into related matters, specifically mentioning the necessitate to uncover the truth surrounding a notebook belonging to Noh Sang-won and to ensure Yoon Suk-yeol receives the maximum possible sentence through the courts as reported by Yonhap Infomax.

Prior to the sentencing, Yoon Suk-yeol underwent an impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court. Asiae.co.kr reported that during the final arguments of the impeachment trial on February 25, 2025, Jeong Cheong-rae, Chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, asserted that the events of December 3rd were witnessed by the entire nation and called for Yoon’s dismissal for the sake of democracy.

The impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol was previously described as “the people holding a president who violated the constitution accountable” according to Biz Chosun.
