Jesse Tyler Ferguson Didn’t Pursue ‘Modern Family’ Spinoff, Preferred New Creative Paths
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, best known for his role as Mitchell Pritchett on the long-running ABC sitcom Modern Family, revealed he wasn’t eager to revisit the character in a potential spinoff. The actor shared his reasoning during an appearance on Wendi McLendon-Covey’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, explaining he was ready to explore new opportunities after eleven seasons.
A Spinoff Was Considered
Following the conclusion of Modern Family in 2020, discussions arose about continuing the story with a spinoff centered around Ferguson and his on-screen husband, Eric Stonestreet (Cameron Tucker). According to Ferguson, a concept was even developed, coinciding with his interest in a New York stage production. However, he found himself hesitant about committing to another long-term project.
The Desire for Change
Ferguson explained that after over a decade in a “rigidly structured sitcom world,” he felt a strong need for change. “It sort of felt like, as the reality of, maybe the spinoff was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, Oh my god, I want to date other people,” he said, using the phrase metaphorically to express his desire to explore different creative avenues. He wanted to experience “what it’s like to not do that” – referring to the demands of a sitcom schedule.
Stonestreet’s Perspective on the Abandoned Spinoff
Eric Stonestreet has also spoken about the scrapped spinoff idea. He revealed that writers had developed a script focusing on Mitchell and Cameron’s life in Missouri, but the network ultimately passed on the project as reported by AOL. Stonestreet expressed feeling “a little hurtful” by the decision, suggesting the characters were perhaps seen as “the classic guys” and no longer worthy of continued investment. He emphasized, however, that he maintains a strong relationship with Ferguson and cherishes his time on Modern Family.
Ferguson’s Current Projects
Jesse Tyler Ferguson continues to operate in television and film. He is known for his role in Cocaine Bear (2023) according to his IMDb profile and has appeared in shows like Elsbeth and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. He also hosts the podcast “Dinner’s On Me.”
The Enduring Legacy of ‘Modern Family’
Modern Family, which aired from 2009 to 2020, remains a popular series in syndication and on streaming platforms. Talk of reboots, prequels, or spinoffs has persisted since its finale, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted initial plans for new projects. Despite the interest, it appears a continuation focusing on Mitchell and Cameron is no longer in the cards, as Ferguson and Stonestreet have both moved on to new endeavors.
