Joanie Mayer Hope: Pioneering Gynecologic Oncologist in Alaska

Dr. Joanie Mayer Hope is a board-certified gynecologic oncologist and founding partner of Alaska Women’s Cancer Care, based in Anchorage, Alaska. She is dedicated to providing comprehensive surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment for women facing gynecologic cancers.

Early Life and Education

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1957, Dr. Hope’s upbringing was shaped by her father’s Air Force career, leading to moves across the United States and overseas before settling in Lenoir, North Carolina. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University in 1979 and subsequently dedicated her career to patient care as a Registered Nurse.

Dr. Hope continued her education, earning her MD from the State University of New York, Brooklyn in 2003. She completed a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University Medical Center, serving as administrative chief in 2007, followed by a three-year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the same institution. She is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology (2009) and Gynecologic Oncology (2011) through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Clinical Practice and Leadership

Dr. Hope is the Director of Gyn Oncology at both Providence Alaska Cancer Center and the Alaska Native Medical Center, and also operates at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. Her approach integrates care across these centers to ensure women with gynecologic cancers receive optimal treatment in the setting that best suits their needs. She is recognized as one of the highest volume robotic surgeons in Alaska, demonstrating her commitment to advanced surgical techniques.

Beyond the Clinic: Advocacy and Music

Dr. Hope is passionate about addressing health disparities and applying creativity to combat gynecologic cancers, both locally and globally. In 2012, she co-founded Let Every Woman Recognize-Alaska, a non-profit organization focused on gynecologic cancer prevention, support, advocacy, and education programs tailored to Alaska’s diverse communities. www.leteverywomanknow.org
