Piero Ferrari’s Influence on the Ferrari Luce’s Design
Ferrari’s forthcoming all-electric vehicle, the Luce, is already generating significant buzz, not just for its innovative technology but also for the design of its interior, particularly its steering wheel. A key figure in shaping this design was Piero Ferrari, son of the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari, who insisted on a specific element that honors the brand’s heritage.
A Three-Spoke Tradition
The steering wheel of the Ferrari Luce features a three-spoke design, a detail directly influenced by Piero Ferrari. According to Marc Newson, co-designer at LoveFrom—the design firm founded by Jony Ive—Piero Ferrari was “absolutely adamant that it was a three-spoke design.” Road & Track reports that Piero Ferrari’s input was profound, despite his typically reserved nature.
Collaboration with LoveFrom
The interior of the Luce is a collaboration between Ferrari and LoveFrom, led by Jony Ive and Marc Newson. The design team aimed for a blend of cutting-edge technology and classic Ferrari aesthetics. Engadget highlights the use of “squircles and circles” and a focus on precision and symmetry, reminiscent of Ive’s perform at Apple.
Design Freedom with an Electric Platform
The Luce being Ferrari’s first all-electric vehicle presented unique design opportunities. Newson noted that the electric powertrain afforded the design team a “degree of freedom” not typically available, both physically and creatively. National Today reports that this freedom allowed for a singular design vision throughout the vehicle.
Inspired by Ferrari’s Past
While embracing innovation, the design team also drew inspiration from Ferrari’s history. Ive cited his own Ferrari 250 Europa, with its riveted-wood-rimmed steering wheel, as a source of inspiration for the Luce’s billet aluminum frame. Newson, a vintage Ferrari enthusiast and participant in the Mille Miglia, also brought his passion for classic Prancing Horses to the project.
A Singular Design Vision
Both Ive and Newson emphasized the importance of a cohesive and singular design for the Luce. They aimed to create a consistent aesthetic that linked the interior and exterior elements, though details of the exterior remain largely undisclosed. The team acknowledged the pressure of designing for such an iconic brand and the anticipation surrounding the reveal of the final product.
