Julius AsAuf: First Recital Tour in Korea

German pianist Julius Asal returns to South Korean stages on Oct. 20 with a debut recital tour at the Seoul Arts Center, anchoring his program in a deliberate confrontation between the first and last piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Bookends of a Legacy at the Seoul Arts Center

The performance marks Asal’s comeback to the country following appearances at the 2024 Seoul Arts Center International Music Festival and the 2025 Daejeon Grand Festival of Janne Chang. The upcoming recital pairs Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 1 alongside the composer’s final Piano Sonata No. 32. Asal told newsis.com that placing these two works together creates a specific tension, explaining that it feels like completing a circle while leaving an opening for unanswered questions. Sonata No. 1 pays direct homage to Beethoven’s teacher Joseph Haydn, reflecting the mentor’s distinct musical spirit. Asal noted in a written interview that South Korean audiences possess a very strong passion for music, expressing great excitement and calling his return very special.

A South Korean Premiere Born from Institutional Anguish

Alongside Beethoven, Asal’s program includes Béla Bartók’s Three Burlesques and Suite for Piano, alongside Lera Auerbach’s Emma Hauck’s Love Letters. The Auerbach piece receives its South Korean premiere during this tour. Asal described the piece as an encounter with the deep abyss of human inner life, citing Friedrich Nietzsche’s observation on gazing into the abyss, stating that he believes there is something extremely powerful in the idea that if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.

Asal Signs Deutsche Grammophon Contract and Targets Symphonic Works

Asal signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 2023 and earned selection as a BBC New Generation Artist. Looking beyond his current solo repertoire, the pianist aims to expand his focus toward symphonic works. He stated an intention to explore Gustav Mahler’s symphonies in greater depth to understand those compositions from the inside out, while emphasizing that external recognition can easily make people lose sight of what truly matters so he tries to focus strictly on the music.
