Usman Eyes McGregor Bout as Makhachev Title Shot Fades

Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has shifted his focus to a potential fight against Conor McGregor, after talks for a title shot against Islam Makhachev appear to have stalled. The move comes as McGregor prepares for his highly anticipated return to the Octagon.

Usman’s Pursuit of a McGregor Matchup

Usman, 38, publicly called for a fight against McGregor on X (formerly Twitter), posting “Usman X McGregor 2026.” This pursuit comes after a period of campaigning for a welterweight title shot against Makhachev, which seemed promising but ultimately didn’t materialize. With limited fights remaining in his career, Usman is seeking the biggest possible matchup.

McGregor’s Return and Potential Opponents

Conor McGregor is gearing up for his return to the UFC after a three-year absence due to a leg injury sustained in his 2021 fight against Dustin Poirier. He recently met with UFC officials to discuss his comeback, reportedly planned for International Fight Week. While initially targeting a June appearance at a UFC event, that opportunity was not granted. Carlos Prates has emerged as a potential opponent for McGregor’s return, with McGregor reportedly agreeing to the bout.

Makhachev’s Perspective and Usman’s Claims

Islam Makhachev, the current UFC welterweight champion, has acknowledged that Usman would present his “hardest fight” in the division, citing Usman’s experience and dominance in the welterweight division. Makhachev believes a fight against Usman would be a significant draw, leveraging Usman’s status as a former champion with numerous title defenses. Although, Makhachev has also expressed a preference for facing contenders who haven’t been “forgotten,” referencing Usman’s recent win over Joaquin Buckley.

Usman’s Frustration with Title Shot Prospects

Usman has voiced frustration over the lack of progress in securing a title shot against Makhachev, questioning why he needs to “sell” his skill level and accomplishments. He believes he represents the best test for Makhachev, despite not having recent conversations with the champion.

The Road Ahead

While a fight between Usman and Makhachev remains a possibility, Usman is now actively pursuing a bout with McGregor. The likelihood of the UFC matching Usman with McGregor is considered low, given Usman’s wrestling-heavy style, which may not appeal to fans seeking a more striking-focused contest. However, Usman remains determined to secure a high-profile fight before the end of his career.
