Pallavolo Macerata Marks 42 Years of Volleyball History

Pallavolo Macerata celebrated its 42nd anniversary on November 3, marking more than four decades since its founding as a modest neighborhood sports project in 1984. The club has evolved from a local youth initiative into a nationally competitive program playing in Italy’s national leagues.

From a Neighborhood Campet to Regional Competition

The club traces its origins back to November 3, 1984, when it launched under the name Polisportiva Montalbano Colleverde. Arturo Angelozzi recounted that the project began with a simple goal: giving local children a healthy place to play sports on a small field behind the team’s historical headquarters in Colleverde. The company was founded by me, Adrio Giacomini and mainly another partner, but now I am the only survivor, Angelozzi explained.

The idea was born to let our children play, Angelozzi said. We started really in a small field behind the historical headquarters of the company in Colleverde. It had occurred to us to try to create a healthy environment for them and we started with a youth championship in our neighborhood.

The organization initially operated as a multi-sport association, including a group dedicated to cycle tourism alongside its early volleyball activities. As participation expanded, the club integrated Arena Volley in 1990 and later competed as Montalbano Arena before officially adopting the name Pallavolo Macerata in October 2017 to strengthen its ties to the city. Over the years, the youth sector also developed significantly since that initial Under 15 championship.

Promotions and Growth Through the Decades

Over the years, the club climbed through regional and national divisions. A major turning point occurred between 2014 and 2015, when the team secured promotion from Serie C to Serie B1, capturing both the Serie C championship and the Coppa Marche along the way, followed by an intermediate jump to Serie B2 and ultimately reaching Serie B1.

Pallavolo Macerata subsequently reached Serie A2 in 2018. Following stints in Serie A3—highlighted by a memorable victory against Mantova—the club returned to Italy’s second national division in 2024.

Angelozzi, who now observes the club from a distance due to health reasons, expressed satisfaction with its ongoing operations under coach Giannini. I don’t manage to participate very much due to health reasons that do not allow me to be very active, but I see good activity, quite a few kids and parents working hard with extreme efficiency and passion, Angelozzi stated. He also admitted, At the beginning I must admit that it was only a pastime, but then an authentic passion that still flows in my blood today. Especially then when the company progressed, with all the promotions and the joys experienced.
