Karl Urban Open to Returning as Judge Dredd
Karl Urban has expressed his strong desire to reprise his role as Judge Dredd, a character he portrayed in the 2012 film Dredd. The actor shared his enthusiasm during an interview on The Playlist podcast while promoting his novel film, “The Bluff,” and upcoming projects including the final season of “The Boys” and “Mortal Kombat II.”
Cult Following and Past Adaptations
Despite not being a major box office success upon its release, Dredd has garnered a dedicated cult following over the years. Urban stated, “I would love to reprise that role in a heartbeat. I really would. I had so much fun making that movie. If I’m not part of it, then I’m all fine with it. I just aim for to see more Dredd stories.”
The character of Judge Dredd first appeared on screen in the 1995 film Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone, which received largely negative reviews. The character originated in the British science fiction comic book 2000 AD in the 1970s and has been a staple of the comic book world for decades, providing ample source material for future adaptations.
New Dredd Film in Development
In July 2023, it was announced that filmmaker Taika Waititi, known for his work on “Thor: Ragnarok,” would be directing a new Judge Dredd feature film. Drew Pearce is attached to write the script Yahoo.

Karl Urban has a history of portraying comic book characters, including William Cooper in Red (2010) AOL. He is also known for his role as Éomer in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” films and his current role in “The Boys.”
