Ali B. Sentenced in Sexual Assault Case, Appeal Planned

Dutch rapper and television presenter Ali B. Has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of rape and sexual assault. The verdict, delivered by judges in Haarlem, comes after a high-profile case stemming from allegations made during a “me too” scandal surrounding the television talent show The Voice of Holland. Ali B., whose full name is Ali Bouali, was not present in court for the ruling and retains the right to appeal the sentence.

The Case and Charges

The case originated from a report on YouTube channel Boos in early 2022, which detailed allegations of harassment and abuse by men involved with The Voice of Holland. Ali B. Was subsequently charged with assaulting three women between 2014 and 2018.

He was found guilty of raping one woman, identified as Naomi, during a writers’ camp in Heiloo in August 2018. He was also found guilty of sexually assaulting another woman, Jill Helena, a participant in The Voice of Holland in 2013. However, he was acquitted of raping singer Ellen ten Damme, though found guilty of sexually assaulting her.

Court Findings and Sentencing

The court noted that while statements from some accusers were detailed and believable, a lack of supporting evidence led to acquittals in certain charges. The court also emphasized that Ali B. Had not taken responsibility for his actions throughout the proceedings.

The public prosecution department had requested a three-year prison sentence, but the judges settled on a two-year term.

Appeal Planned

Ali B.’s lawyer, Bart Swier, stated that his client will appeal the sentence regardless of its length. Swier indicated that the prosecution was prepared for a prison sentence and that the demand for three years was not unexpected. He emphasized that Ali B. Maintains his innocence and will contest the conviction.

Separately, the High Court of Kenya at Mombasa heard a petition in 2021 (Ali Bembuzi Mwapombe v Director of Public Prosecutions [2021] KEHC 7541) concerning a different individual, Ali Bembuzi Mwapombe, seeking release from indefinite detention following a conviction for murder and a finding of guilty but insane.
