Kennedy Center Pursues Legal Action Against Drummer Chuck Redd

The Kennedy Center is seeking $1 million in damages from jazz drummer Chuck Redd after he canceled a scheduled Christmas concert to protest the cultural center’s recent renaming as the Trump Kennedy Center.Redd publicly opposed the name change, deeming it a politically motivated decision.

According to Kennedy Center board chairman, Bruce Williamson, the cancellation constitutes an expensive “political stunt” that disrupted holiday programming and caused financial harm. Williamson stated the center incurred meaningful losses due to the last-minute cancellation and associated refund costs.

Together, Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) has filed a legal challenge to the name change itself, arguing that it violates the terms of the Kennedy Center’s founding legislation and diminishes the institution’s non-partisan status. Norton’s lawsuit seeks to revert the center’s name to its original designation.

The controversy surrounding the renaming began in November 2025, following a substantial donation from former President Donald Trump. the kennedy Center’s board approved the change despite widespread criticism from artists and patrons.
