Pony Chung Foundation and KFA Expand Youth Football Scholarships

The Pony Chung Foundation and the Korea Football Association (KFA) are significantly expanding their joint youth football scholarship program, increasing support for young players across South Korea. This initiative aims to nurture future talent and provide opportunities for promising athletes to pursue both their education and football careers.

Expansion of Scholarship Program

Starting this year, the number of scholarship recipients will increase from 60 to 100 players annually. This expansion will allow more young athletes to benefit from the program, with a total of 200 million Korean Won (KRW) allocated for this year’s scholarships.

Scholarship Details

Each scholarship is valued at 2 million KRW. Recipients are selected based on their recent performance, recommendations from Municipal Associations, and input from leaders within the K-League Youth Team, the Korean Women’s Football League, and the KFA. The selection process prioritizes not only athletic ability but also considers players who have overcome challenging family circumstances while demonstrating dedication to their dreams.

Notable Recipients

Recent scholarship recipients include Chimara Justin (Suwon Samsung U15), Lim Hye Hye (Ulsan Hyundai Cheongwoon Middle School), and Myung Sungjun (FCKHT U15).

History of the Partnership

The youth football scholarship project began in 2015, stemming from an agreement between the Pony Chung Foundation and the KFA. The foundation’s commitment is to foster talent in various fields and support the development of promising individuals.

Cumulative Impact

To date, a total of 640 young players have received scholarships through this program, with a cumulative support value of 1.28 billion KRW. This represents the largest scale of sports-related scholarships awarded in a single event in South Korea.

Pony Chung Foundation’s Broader Initiatives

Established in 2005, the Pony Chung Foundation, named after the late Hyundai Industrial Development Honorary Chairman Chung Se-young, supports a range of initiatives including domestic and international scholarships, academic support projects, and talent discovery programs across various social fields. The foundation also supports young adults preparing for independence through vocational training and other resources.

Looking Ahead

KFA President and Pony Chung Foundation Chairman Chung Mong-gyu encouraged the scholarship recipients to remember the support they’ve received and to persevere through challenges, ultimately becoming the future of Korean football. The continued partnership between the Pony Chung Foundation and the KFA promises to provide sustained support for the next generation of Korean football stars.
