Thailand Expands Social Security Benefits for Kidney Disease Patients
Thai citizens insured under the Social Security system will have access to comprehensive and internationally-aligned treatment benefits for kidney disease, including dialysis and potential kidney transplantation. These benefits aim to provide financial support and access to care for individuals suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Rising Prevalence of Kidney Disease in Thailand
Ms. Treenuch Thienthong, Minister of Labor, highlighted the growing concern of kidney disease in Thailand. In 2025, it is estimated that over 1.12 million people have chronic kidney disease (CKD), with an additional 800,000 modern cases diagnosed. Approximately 17.6 percent of the Thai population currently lives with CKD, often linked to underlying conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.
Social Security Coverage for Kidney Replacement Therapy
The Social Security Office (SSO) provides coverage for four primary methods of kidney replacement therapy for insured individuals under Sections 33 and 39. These include:
- Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): Benefits are provided up to 20,000 baht per month, including erythropoietin injections and initial pipe laying costs of up to 20,000 baht per person over two years. Additional payments, not exceeding 10,000 baht, may be available if pipe replacement is needed within that timeframe.
- Hemodialysis (HD): Coverage is available at a rate of up to 1,500 baht per session, not exceeding 4,500 baht per week or 18,000 baht per month. This includes erythropoietin injections and costs associated with blood vessel preparation.
- Kidney Transplant: Benefits cover pre-operative treatment, the surgical procedure itself and post-operative care, including lifelong immunosuppressive medications. A lump sum benefit of up to 292,000 baht is provided for the transplant.
- Palliative Care: Support for patients who are not candidates for other forms of treatment.
Financial Support Details
Insured individuals have access to treatment rights for kidney disease at all stages without charge. Specific financial support includes:
- Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis: Up to 32,700 baht per month, plus erythropoietin injections.
- Hemodialysis: Up to 4,500 baht per week (maximum of three sessions).
Commitment to Quality of Life
Ms. Treenuch emphasized the SSO’s commitment to ensuring insured individuals with kidney disease receive comprehensive benefits to maintain their quality of life, ability to work, and longevity. The SSO aims to provide benefits that are equivalent to or exceed international standards.
