Komatsu Launches 45.5-Tonne D175AX-10 Bulldozer With 25% Higher Production

Komatsu Europe has introduced the new 45.5-tonne D175AX-10 bulldozer, succeeding the D155AX-8 model in the manufacturer’s large dozer range. First previewed at CONEXPO-CON/AGG earlier this year, the machine delivers up to 27% higher net engine power and 25% higher production compared to its predecessor. Gregory Peeters, product manager for large machines at Komatsu Europe, stated that the machine combines an outstanding power-to-weight ratio with optimized fuel consumption and Komatsu reliability to provide a total cost of ownership advantage.

Engine Power and Performance Specifications

Powered by a next-generation 337kW Komatsu DBA127 engine and transmission, the D175AX-10 provides controllable power designed for fast cycle times in demanding quarry and earthmoving applications. The machine achieves up to 27% higher net engine power, 18% higher drawbar power, and up to 25% higher production than the D155AX-8 while improving fuel efficiency by up to 15%. The engine specifications represent a substantial increase over the D155 model. The dozer is equipped with a 10.6m³ Semi-U blade, replacing the 9.4m³ blade on the previous version, and retains Komatsu’s patented variable geometry ripper system.

Operator Controls and Technology Integration

The machine features a range of automated functions designed to reduce repetitive inputs during long working shifts. Blade Auto Pitch automatically adjusts the blade position during the working cycle, while automatic ripper functions, Neutral Auto Brake, stepless travel-speed adjustment, and programmable speed settings assist the operator. The redesigned cab includes increased visibility, reduced blind spots, a premium air-suspension seat with heating and ventilation, electrically adjustable consoles, and the Palm Command Control System. An all-new digital interface incorporates a touch-screen monitor and a 10-inch high-resolution KomVision display.

Jobsite Connectivity and Machine Control Packages

The D175AX-10 integrates with Komatsu Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance Flex, providing real-time guidance to the operator using track-level positioning. Customers can also utilize the Smart Construction Dashboard to compare as-built information with original design data, monitor cut-and-fill volumes, and create a 3D history of completed work. For quarry operations, the dozer is ready for integration with Smart Quarry Site to track fleet utilization, production, fuel performance, and operational efficiency. Alongside the dozer, Komatsu Smart Construction offers the 3D-MG system, which Ian De Dobbelaere of Smart Construction described as a versatile basic package featuring an inertial measurement unit at track height, two antennae, a Wi-Fi router, and a radio delivering centimeter accuracy at roughly half the price of millimetre-accuracy finishing systems.

Maintenance Intervals and Serviceability

Routine maintenance on the D175AX-10 is streamlined through centralized and ground-level service points, fluid-level checks from inside the cab, easier oil sampling, a swing-out cooling fan, and remote lubrication points. Gregory Peeters stated that improvements include extended hydraulic oil replacement intervals, which rise from 2,000 hours on the D155 to 6,000 hours on the new machine. Additionally, the redesigned diesel particulate filter provides an extended cleaning interval of up to 8,000 hours to help minimize downtime and reduce lifetime operating costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where was the Komatsu D175AX-10 first shown to the public?

The bulldozer was first previewed earlier in the year at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG trade show.

How much material does the new Semi-U blade hold compared to the older model?

The D175AX-10 is equipped with a 10.6m³ Semi-U blade, which is larger than the 9.4m³ blade found on its predecessor, the D155AX-8.

What are the changes to the hydraulic oil replacement schedule on the new dozer?

Komatsu extended the hydraulic oil replacement interval from 2,000 hours on the previous D155 model to 6,000 hours on the D175AX-10.

What accuracy does the Smart Construction 3D-MG system provide?

According to Ian De Dobbelaere of Smart Construction, the 3D-MG system provides centimeter accuracy at approximately half the cost of millimetre-accuracy systems used for high-precision finishing work.
