AWOL Ukrainian Soldier Detained in Kyiv Following Knife Attacks

Kyiv, Ukraine – February 20, 2026 – A 26-year-old Ukrainian serviceman, absent without leave (AWOL), was detained by Kyiv police on Friday following a series of knife attacks that left two individuals injured. The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison, according to authorities.

Details of the Attacks

The first incident occurred when the suspect, reportedly intoxicated, initiated a conflict with a 28-year-old Kyiv resident. During the altercation, the suspect stabbed the man in the neck, inflicting a critical injury. The victim was immediately hospitalized as reported by the Main Department of the National Police in Kyiv.

Later the same evening, the suspect approached a 56-year-old woman and offered to escort her home. After being refused when he allegedly insisted on staying overnight, he attacked her, cutting her face with a knife.

Suspect in Custody

Police quickly apprehended the suspect, who has been identified as a local resident and a member of the Ukrainian military currently AWOL. He has been taken into custody pending further investigation and legal proceedings. Investigators have informed the detainee of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 15, Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (completed attempted intentional murder), as well as under Part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional grievous bodily harm).

Separate Incidents of Arson in Kyiv

In separate incidents, Kyiv police have also been investigating a series of arsons targeting vehicles, including military vehicles. A 35-year-old man was arrested on February 17, 2026, for allegedly setting fire to seven cars between December 2025 and January 2026. The suspect reportedly acted for payment, and in some cases, disguised civilian vehicles as military targets to increase his reward. He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.
