Leapmotor: Stellantis’s Bet on a Rising Chinese EV Brand

The automotive landscape is rapidly evolving, and one name increasingly appearing on the radar of global automakers is Leapmotor. Although relatively unknown to many consumers, this Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has garnered significant attention – and investment – from industry giant Stellantis. Leapmotor’s Rapid Ascent

Founded in 2015, Leapmotor quickly moved from inception to production, delivering its first vehicles in 2019. In a remarkably short period, the company has demonstrated impressive growth, producing 596,555 vehicles in 2023. Leapmotor is actively expanding its workforce, signaling continued ambition and investment in its future.

Stellantis’s Strategic Investment

Recognizing the potential of the Chinese EV market and Leapmotor’s innovative approach, Stellantis acquired a 20% stake in Zhejiang Motor Technology Co Ltd (Leapmotor’s parent company) in 2021. This joint venture, Leapmotor International, aims to leverage Stellantis’s established global distribution network and expertise to accelerate Leapmotor’s international expansion. Sales in Europe began in 2024, with the Gowan Group handling distribution in Ireland.

The Leapmotor T03: An Affordable EV Entry Point

One of Leapmotor’s key models is the T03, a compact electric vehicle positioned as an affordable urban runaround. Priced just under €19,000, the T03 offers a surprising level of standard equipment, including a panoramic sunroof, electric windows, cruise control, a 10.1” infotainment screen, and an 8” digital instrument cluster. The T03 is powered by a 93bhp electric motor and a 37.3kWh battery, providing a claimed range of 265km (approximately 185km in real-world conditions).

Addressing Stellantis’s EV Challenges

Stellantis reported losses of €22.3 billion in 2023, largely attributed to EV write-downs and strategic restructuring. Leapmotor presents a solution to gaps in Stellantis’s product lineup, particularly in the affordable EV segment. The T03, in particular, offers Stellantis a readily available, cost-effective entry point into the competitive small EV market.

Expanding the Leapmotor Portfolio

While the T03 is currently leading the charge, Leapmotor has a broader portfolio of models in production, including the B10 compact SUV and the C10 mid-sized SUV. These models are expected to follow the T03 into European markets, further expanding Leapmotor’s reach and appeal.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the promising outlook, Leapmotor faces challenges. Building brand recognition in new markets is a significant hurdle, as evidenced by the frequent questioning consumers have about the brand. But, the company’s competitive pricing, well-equipped vehicles, and the backing of Stellantis position it for success.
