Integration of cryptocurrencies in the Telegram wallet
Communication platform Telegram has taken a major step forward in its cryptocurrency development by integrating Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) directly into its TON Wallet. This innovation allows users to store, transfer and use these two major cryptocurrencies right in the same environment where they communicate, making managing digital assets as easy as possible, comparable to sending regular messages.
The move is strategically important as Bitcoin accounts for around 59% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization, while Ethereum accounts for another 11%. With this integration, Telegram users get direct access to these important crypto assets through the platform’s own wallet.
TON Pay: a unified payment platform
A week before this announcement, the TON Foundation announced TON Pay, a new unified interface for crypto-payments within Telegram’s internal apps, or Mini Apps. Equipped with SDK (Software Development Kit) tools for developers, TON Pay makes it easy to integrate crypto payment acceptance, regardless of a specific wallet. It supports both Toncoin and stablecoins, including USDT, allowing businesses to accept payments without complex technical configuration.
Speed, efficiency and future plans
According to TON Foundation Vice President of Payments Nikolas Plek, TON Pay enables “naive” payment acceptance on the TON network with a simple SDK connection, supporting a variety of wallets and assets. The system is designed to work with transactions that last less than a second, and the average commission does not exceed 0.01 USD. The TON Foundation positions this product as the foundation for the payment infrastructure for Telegram’s vast audience of more than 1.1 billion monthly active users.
Initially, the functionality will be available only in Mini Apps, but it is planned to expand it to the web environment and other platforms. It is also planned to introduce subscriptions, alternative withdrawal mechanisms, business analytics and cooperation with local service providers in the future.
