Lille’s Municipal Elections Observe Green Party Divisions Over Socialist Alliance

Lille’s municipal elections are facing internal strife within the Ecologist party following Stéphane Baly’s decision to align with the Socialist Party (PS) led by Mayor Arnaud Deslandes for the second round of voting. The move has sparked significant backlash from some party members who favored an alliance with La France Insoumise (LFI) candidate Lahouaria Addouche.

Internal Discord Erupts

Shortly after the official announcement of the PS-Ecologist alliance, Stéphanie Bocquet, a long-standing environmentalist and current municipal councilor, voiced her dissent on Instagram with the hashtag #NotInMyName. Bocquet, with 35 years of experience in the environmental movement, had advocated for a partnership with LFI’s Addouche, who garnered 23.36% of the vote in the first round, closely trailing Deslandes’ PS list.

Hellemmes Follows Suit with Withdrawal

The divisions extend beyond Lille proper. In Hellemmes, a commune associated with Lille since 1977, the green list led by Simon Jamelin also secured a third-place finish. Still, Jamelin has withdrawn his list from the second round, citing disagreements with both outgoing Mayor Deslandes and Lucas Fournier, the LFI list leader in Hellemmes, despite reaching “a great programmatic convergence” during negotiations.

A Divided Environmentalist Vote

The future of the environmentalist vote remains uncertain, with estimates suggesting a roughly 50/50 split. Sources within the Green party report attempts to quell the internal conflict, acknowledging the emotional toll the decision has taken on members. Regional authorities have also expressed concern over public airing of disagreements.

Voter Reactions Vary

Reactions from green voters are mixed. Some, like teacher Antoine Gilman, support the alliance with Deslandes, believing he will continue to address ecological concerns. Others, such as graphic designer Louise Morel, prioritize pragmatism and express reservations about LFI’s proposals regarding free public services and funding. Some voters are so disillusioned they are considering abstaining from the second round.

Upcoming Events and Campaign Momentum

Two rallies are scheduled for Thursday evening: one in support of the PS-Ecologist alliance and another featuring Jean-Luc Mélenchon campaigning for Lahouaria Addouche. Mélenchon’s choice of Lille for his final municipal rally underscores LFI’s hopes in the city. The campaign is expected to remain competitive until the final votes are tallied.
