Apple Unveils the MacBook Neo: A New Era of Affordable Computing

After months of anticipation, Apple has officially launched the MacBook Neo, a new laptop designed to bring the Mac experience to a wider audience with a starting price of $599. The MacBook Neo represents Apple’s most affordable laptop offering to date, with educational pricing dropping the cost to $499 for teachers and students.

Design and Display

The MacBook Neo shares aesthetic similarities with the MacBook Air, featuring an aluminum design with rounded corners and a lightweight build at 2.7 pounds. It boasts a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2408 x 1506 and a brightness of 500 nits. This display quality surpasses many PC laptops in the same price range, which often feature 1080p screens.

Keyboard, Trackpad, and Touch ID

While the keyboard layout is reminiscent of the MacBook Air, the MacBook Neo features a standard multi-touch trackpad with a physical click mechanism, differing from the Force Touch trackpad found in higher-end models. The base model does not include Touch ID for biometric authentication; this feature is available on the upgraded 512GB storage configuration.

Performance and Chipset

Powering the MacBook Neo is the Apple A18 Pro chip, the same silicon found in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. This marks a departure from the Apple Silicon M-series chips used in other Mac models. The laptop is paired with 8GB of unified memory, and Apple does not offer memory upgrade options. Apple claims the MacBook Neo is “up to 50 percent faster for everyday tasks” compared to a similarly priced PC laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor.

Connectivity and Ports

The MacBook Neo offers connectivity options including one USB 3 Type-C port (up to 10 Gb/s and DisplayPort 1.4 support), one USB 2 Type-C port (up to 480 Mb/s), and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It does not include Thunderbolt 4 ports like the MacBook Air, nor does it feature a MagSafe charging connector; either Type-C port can be used for power.

Additional Features

The MacBook Neo includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, dual speakers, and 60GB/s memory bandwidth. It ships with macOS 26 and supports on-device Apple Intelligence features.

Pricing and Availability

The MacBook Neo is available for pre-order today, starting at $599 for the 256GB model. Upgrading to 512GB of storage and adding Touch ID increases the price to $699. Educational discounts bring the base model down to $499 for eligible teachers and students.
