Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the musical sequel starring Lily James, Amanda Seyfried and Cher, is coming to Netflix on February 24, 2026, following its release on Max.
Directed and written by Ol Parker Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again the story of the first film from 2008 continues. Based on the successful musical comedy, which was developed around the well-known songs of ABBA, this second part complements the universe of the original. Featuring an all-star cast including Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Andy Garcia and Cher, the film was released in theaters in July 2018 and will be released February 24, 2026 on Netflix be available.
The story alternates between past and present. In 1979, after graduating from Oxford, young Donna, along with her friends Tanya and Rosie, seized on the desire to travel and set off through Europe before settling on the small Greek island of Kalokairi. During her adventure she meets three men – Harry, Bill and Sam – whose lives will shape her forever. Donna’s decision to settle on the island, in a dilapidated farm that later becomes the famous villa, forms the emotional center of this story about self-determination and love decisions.
Nowadays, Sophie is trying to open the Hotel Bella Donna as a tribute to her late mother. Challenged by unforeseen events and the threat of bad weather, she finds support from Donna’s relatives and the three paternal figures around her. The film reflects the paths of mother and daughtercombines themes of motherhood, passing on and self-assertion, while ABBA’s songs musically accompany each important milestone throughout history.

This sequel comes ten years after the global success of Mamma Mia! There Moviewhich broke the $600 million mark in international revenue. Ol Parker takes over the direction from Phyllida Lloyd and relies on a narrative double story that closely connects past and present. ABBA’s founding members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus serve as executive producers and oversee the recording of the songs, which were produced in London with lyrics adapted for better storytelling.
Filming of the island scenes took place in Croatia on the island of Vis, which serves as the backdrop for Kalokairi. Anthony Van Laast will choreograph the stage version, ensuring aesthetic continuity with the franchise. The film is also a long-distance comeback for Meryl Streep and Cher, almost forty years after Silkwoodwhile also marking Andy Garcia’s first foray into the musical genre.
Structured like a cross-generational narrative, the feature film retains the festive and choral atmosphere of the first part, but at the same time deepens the melodramatic dimension. The interplay of eras gives the film a more thoughtful touch without sacrificing the well-known group numbers. The concept continues the tradition of great popular music sagascombines nostalgia, pop, romance and the spirit of an ensemble troupe – all in the spirit of a cross-generational entertainment film.
