Manchester United Falls to Bournemouth in Three-Goal Defeat at Old Trafford
Manchester United dropped to 16th place in the Premier League standings after suffering a 0-3 defeat against Bournemouth, according to a report. The loss extends United’s winless run across all competitions to eight matches and leaves the club just one point above the relegation zone after eight league fixtures. Manager Michael Carrick altered his starting lineup by making four changes from the side that lost 1-4 to Como in the UEFA Champions League on Dec. 21, including benching captain Bruno Fernandes. Bournemouth applied early pressure with scoring chances from forward Rayan and forward Evanilson before breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute. Forward Justin Kluivert delivered a free-kick from the right flank, allowing an unmarked Rayan to finish with his left foot at the far post. United fell further behind just before halftime when defender Leny Yoro slipped in his own half, surrendering possession to Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert. Truffert crossed into the penalty area, where midfielder Marcus Tavernier converted to give the visitors a two-goal advantage at the break. Evanilson had a goal disallowed for offside shortly after the second-half restart, but the Bournemouth forward added a third in the 71st minute by rounding advancing goalkeeper Senne Lammens and sliding the ball into an empty net from a tight angle following a long ball from midfielder Lewis Cook.
Opta Statistics Highlight Historic Lows for United’s Season Start
Data from Opta shows that Manchester United has accumulated just seven points from its opening eight league matches, recording one win, four draws, and three losses. That total marks the club’s lowest points tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign since the 1986/87 season, when the team managed four points after eight games.
The three-goal margin also equals United’s heaviest home defeat in the Premier League, matching the club’s 0-3 loss to Bournemouth in December 2024. Despite registering 63 percent possession and 17 total shots during the match, United placed only three attempts on target.
