Marathon’s Pre-Launch Performance: Navigating the Live Service Landscape
Following the challenges faced by Sony’s live service hero shooter, Concord, all eyes are on Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. Recent data suggests a cautiously optimistic outlook for Marathon, with pre-order and sales rankings showing improvement after a recent server slam test, though complexities in interpreting these metrics remain.
Mixed Reception to the Server Slam
The recent server slam for Marathon generated both enthusiasm and criticism. The key question now is whether Marathon can achieve the success of Helldivers 2, or if Sony’s live service ambitions will continue to struggle.
PlayStation Store Performance
Initial reports indicated Marathon held positions 6 and 9 in the PlayStation Store pre-order charts, a significant jump from the previous week’s rankings of 16 and 20. This suggests the server slam successfully spurred player interest. However, interpreting these rankings requires nuance. The PlayStation Store’s “best-selling pre-orders” and general sales rankings are based on total sales revenue, not unit sales. A standard edition of Marathon priced at €39.99 must sell approximately three times as often as a more expensive edition, such as the “WWE 2K26 Attitude Era Edition” at €129.99, to achieve a comparable placement.
Online reports suggest Marathon is currently on the third page of the PlayStation Store’s total sales charts, ranking 55th. While factually correct, this placement is less indicative of performance due to the prominence of free-to-play live service games on the first page, alongside full-price titles. Again, Marathon needs to generate higher sales figures to achieve a comparable ranking.
Steam Charts Offer Encouraging Signs
Marathon currently ranks 19th among top sellers on Steam. However, initial reports focusing solely on German sales provided a limited view. Globally, Marathon is in 4th place in the Steam rankings. Filtering out already-released games, Marathon is the most successful title in the pre-order phase.
Steam’s ranking system is based on total sales revenue. As Marathon does not currently generate income through microtransactions and is sold at a lower price point than competitors like Resident Evil Requiem, it requires higher unit sales to achieve a similar ranking. This suggests the game is performing better than initial interpretations suggested.
Sony’s Commitment to Live Service Games
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Hermen Hulst, has acknowledged the challenges faced with Concord, stating it was “insufficiently differentiated” in a highly competitive market IGN. Sony remains committed to live service games and has “introduced much more rigorous processes for validating our creative, commercial, [and] development assumptions” OpenCritic. Hulst also noted feedback from Marathon’s alpha test has been “varied.”
Looking Ahead
Marathon is scheduled for release on March 5, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A clearer picture of its success will emerge after launch, but current pre-order and sales data offer a cautiously optimistic outlook as Sony seeks to avoid repeating the mistakes made with Concord.
