Bungie Details Content Roadmap for Marathon’s First Two Seasons
Bungie has unveiled its plans for the initial six months of content for its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, outlining a roadmap that extends through November 2026. The studio intends to support Marathon with ongoing free updates, mirroring its approach with Destiny 2.
Season 1: Death Is the First Step (March – June)
Launching alongside Marathon on March 5, 2026, Season 1, titled “Death Is the First Step,” is designed to be a substantial launch offering. Bungie aims to maintain players engaged with a robust set of features, including:
- Complete progression for all six Factions and Contracts
- All six launch Runner Shells (character skins)
- Access to three Zones, with the Outpost unlocking immediately and the Cryo Archive becoming available mid-March
- 28 Weapons, complete with Mods, Implants, and Cores
- Earnable Cosmetics, Achievements, and Storytelling elements through the Codex
The Cryo Archive, an end-game zone within the Marathon ship, will require community effort to unlock, presenting players with security puzzles and the opportunity to uncover frozen vaults and confront a formidable entity. Ranked Mode, offering exclusive rewards based on leaderboard position, is likewise slated for release mid-March.
Season 2: Nightfall (June – August)
Following Season 1, Season 2, named “Nightfall,” will run from June to August. This season introduces a night version of the Night Marsh zone, a new Runner Shell, and a new system called The Cradle. The Cradle will allow players greater control over the statistical strengths and weaknesses of their Runner Shells.
Bungie has confirmed that all post-launch updates for Marathon will be provided free of charge, eliminating the need for expansions or DLC.
Progression Resets with Each Season
With the launch of each new season, Marathon will feature progression resets, affecting gear, contract progression, faction progression, and player level. This is intended to provide a fresh experience and encourage continued engagement with the game’s evolving content.
