Winter Storm to Bring Snow, Ice to Massachusetts This Weekend
A winter storm is forecast to impact Massachusetts from Friday into Saturday, bringing a mix of snow, rain, and freezing rain. Whereas a significant coastal storm is possible late Sunday into Monday, its track remains uncertain.
Winter Weather Advisory in Effect
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of Massachusetts, beginning Friday and extending through Saturday. Travelers should anticipate slippery road conditions and exercise caution during the Friday evening commute. NWS Boston urges drivers to slow down.
Snowfall Predictions
Snowfall amounts will vary across the state. Northern Massachusetts could see up to 6 inches of snow, while the Boston area is expected to receive around 2 to 3 inches. Areas north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and into the Merrimack Valley/North Shore are likely to remain mostly snow, with accumulations of 3 to 5 inches, and up to 6 inches near the Novel Hampshire border.
Timing and Precipitation Types
Precipitation will begin in far western New England after the Friday morning commute and spread eastward throughout the afternoon. The Boston area and South Shore are expected to start with rain mixed with ice pellets, transitioning to snow Friday evening.
Potential Coastal Storm
Meteorologists are also monitoring a potential coastal storm for late Sunday into Monday. The NWS notes that the system could miss Southern New England or only brush the region, but a more significant impact cannot be ruled out at this time. Even if the storm remains offshore, gusty winds and increased waves are likely, potentially leading to ocean-enhanced snow showers over southeastern Massachusetts. More accurate forecasts will be available within the next 24 to 36 hours. NWS Boston Facebook
