Fit for Medical Robotics: Revolutionizing Rehabilitation with AI and Robotics

A major Italian initiative, Fit for Medical Robotics (Fit4MedRob), is poised to transform rehabilitation and assistive care through the development of cutting-edge robotic and digital technologies. Supported by over 100 million euros in funding from the Piano Nazionale per gli Investimenti Complementari del PNRR (National Complementary Investment Plan), the project aims to address the needs of patients with motor, sensory and cognitive impairments.

The Fit4MedRob Project: A National Effort

Fit4MedRob involves 25 Italian partners, including universities, clinical centers, and companies, such as the University of Pavia, ICS Maugeri, and the Fondazione C. Mondino . The project focuses on creating a continuum of care, from prevention to chronic home assistance, by leveraging advancements in biorobotics, bionics, and artificial intelligence.

New Rehabilitation Laboratories and Technologies

The initiative has led to the creation of five robotic rehabilitation laboratories in Pavia, Milan, Montescano, Telese Terme, and Bari, with the Bari institute designated as the project’s Center of Excellence . These laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art robotic technologies, including:

  • Robotic beds for early rehabilitation
  • Exoskeletons (with and without load relief)
  • Wearable devices
  • Robotic arms and gloves for hand rehabilitation

Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Practice

Beyond robotics, Fit4MedRob is exploring the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve clinical diagnostics and research. The Maugeri Medical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory is developing AI-powered tools for predictive diagnostics and drug discovery . One example is the Orientamed platform, an AI-based chatbot designed to assist general practitioners in managing patients with rheumatoid arthritis, currently in a preliminary phase involving 20 patients and 10 general practitioners.

Training the Next Generation of Experts

The project also supports education and training in the field of rehabilitation. The first second-level Master’s degree in “Prevention, Care and Rehabilitation of the Fragile Patient” has been established in collaboration with the University of Pavia and the Ministry of University and Research .

Fit for Medical Robotics Conference 2026

The Fit for Medical Robotics Conference will be held March 9-11, 2026, in Naples, Italy . The conference aims to showcase the latest advancements and innovations in medical robotics and rehabilitation.
