Mayfield, Kentucky, Rebuild Inspires Statewide Disaster Relief Funding
More than four years after the devastating December 2021 tornado, the ongoing revitalization of Mayfield, Kentucky, has spurred a new funding source for disaster relief across the commonwealth. The Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) has introduced a specialty license plate, “Cities Drive Kentucky,” with proceeds dedicated to supporting communities impacted by disasters.
New “Cities Drive Kentucky” License Plate
The “Cities Drive Kentucky” license plate was officially unveiled at the 2025 KLC Conference & Expo in Owensboro. KLC CEO J.D. Chaney conceived the idea after witnessing the widespread support following the 2021 tornado that ravaged Western Kentucky .
The plates are available for purchase at county clerks’ offices throughout Kentucky and cost $44 annually. All proceeds will be directed towards disaster relief efforts for Kentucky communities in need .
Mayfield’s Rebuilding Progress
Mayor Kathy O’Nan expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the KLC’s proactive role in providing aid and support to cities. She outlined the significant rebuilding efforts underway in Mayfield and the surrounding county .
The city has been awarded $31.5 million in federal and state funding to support the reconstruction process. This funding has been instrumental in the construction of a new City Hall and Police Department, slated for completion in spring 2027 .
The new City Hall will be over 37,000 square feet, more than tripling the size of the previous structure, which was approximately 12,000 square feet. Prior to the new construction, city operations were temporarily housed in a former Snap Fitness building .
Funding has also been allocated to rebuild Fire Station 1, with firefighters expected to move into the new facility next month. Over $30 million was received in 2024 to construct two affordable housing projects, creating a total of 123 housing units .
The 2021 Western Kentucky Tornado
The revitalization efforts follow the devastating EF4 tornado that struck Mayfield and surrounding areas on December 10, 2021. The tornado, sometimes referred to as the “Western Kentucky tornado” or the “Mayfield tornado,” caused widespread and catastrophic damage across eleven Kentucky counties .
