## Historic Winter Storm Disrupts Travel, Prompts Cold Weather Alerts Across Eastern US

A severe winter storm has brought travel to a standstill and prompted widespread cold weather alerts across the eastern United States. As of january 26, 2026, the storm, linked to a disruption of the polar vortex, continues to impact major cities from Washington D.C. to New York.

Several major airports, including those serving Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City, experienced significant disruptions. FlightAware reports nearly 15,000 flights were canceled over the weekend, with thousands more delayed.

In Houston, Texas, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, mindful of the devastating winter storm of 2021 that left millions without power. While the worst-case scenario appears to have been avoided so far, houston Mayor John Whitmire warned of freezing temperatures overnight and announced that schools would remain closed on Monday. “We cannot relax our vigilance. Temperatures will be negative this evening, and based on all the reports we are receiving, the moisture on the ground will freeze after dark,” Whitmire stated during a Sunday press conference.

The current weather event is attributed to a southward extension of the polar vortex, a mass of cold air typically circulating over the Arctic. Scientists are investigating the potential link between the increasing frequency of polar vortex disruptions and climate change, though the relationship is complex and natural variability also plays a role.

The storm has also sparked political commentary. Former President Donald Trump used the occasion to question climate change on
