Two Charged in Memphis Legal Services Scam

Memphis, TN – Two individuals, Candice Eddins and Derrick Thomas, both 41 years old, have been arrested and charged in connection with a legal services scam that defrauded residents of Shelby County, Tennessee. The arrests were made following an investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

Details of the Scam

The SCSO began investigating on March 9, 2026, after receiving a complaint about the scam. Victims reported being advised to hire specific legal services recommended by the scammers. After paying thousands of dollars for these services, the victims discovered the services were never provided, and they had been deceived by individuals posing as lawyers. Action News 5 and National Today both reported on the arrests.

The Investigation and Arrests

Detectives determined that Candice Eddins was the primary perpetrator of the scam, with Derrick Thomas acting as an accomplice whereas incarcerated. Eddins was arrested on March 12, 2026, and faces charges of impersonating a licensed professional and theft of property valued between $2,500 and $10,000. Thomas has been charged with the same offenses. Fox13 Memphis confirmed these charges.
