Meningitis B Vaccine Demand Surges Amid Outbreak and Debate Over Wider Access
Young people in south-east England and beyond are seeking the meningitis B vaccine following a recent outbreak that has resulted in two fatalities. The increased demand is prompting concerns about potential pharmacy shortages and reigniting discussions about the optimal public health strategy for combating the disease.
Current Situation and Vaccine Availability
Individuals concerned about potential exposure during the outbreak in Kent can access the vaccine and preventative antibiotics through the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), universities, clinics, and general practitioners (GPs). However, pharmacies are reporting a significant surge in private demand from individuals outside the immediate risk group.
The National Pharmacy Association (NPA), representing 6,000 independent pharmacies in Britain, stated that pharmacies have been “inundated with requests” for the MenB vaccine in recent days. At the University of Kent’s vaccination center, students reportedly faced a mile-long queue and wait times of up to eight hours for a shot.
Pharmacy chains Boots and Superdrug have issued warnings about potential shortages and are implementing online waiting lists to manage demand. In response, the government released 20,000 doses of the meningitis B vaccine from NHS stockpiles to alleviate shortages in the private market, though the NPA suggests this may not be sufficient to meet the current demand.
Vaccine Options and Costs
The meningitis B vaccine currently available on the NHS, Bexsero, is manufactured by GSK. Trumenba, produced by Pfizer, is also available privately. Both vaccines typically cost around £200 (approximately $267) privately.1
Understanding Meningitis B
Meningitis B is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, caused by a specific group of bacteria. Other bacterial strains and viral infections can also cause meningitis. Symptoms include fever, drowsiness, and vomiting, and the condition can rapidly worsen.
Since 2015, the meningitis B vaccine has been routinely administered to babies, who are at the highest risk. Teenagers receive a different vaccine that protects against other strains of the disease.
Antibiotics vs. Vaccination
Experts emphasize that antibiotics are the most effective immediate response for individuals who believe they may have been exposed to the infection. Antibiotics work quickly, while immunity from the two-part vaccine takes approximately a month to develop. Brendan Wren, professor and co-director of the Vaccine Center at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, highlighted this point.
Calls for Expanded Vaccination Program
The recent outbreak has renewed the debate regarding wider access to the meningitis B vaccine for teenagers, who represent the second-highest risk group. Tom Nutt, chief executive of Meningitis Now, argues there is a “strong moral basis for intervention” due to a gap in the current NHS vaccination schedule.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has requested that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) reassess eligibility criteria for the meningitis B vaccine through the NHS. He also stated that purchasing a vaccine privately is unnecessary for those at risk, as they are being reached through the UKHSA campaign.
JCVI Considerations
Adam Finn, emeritus professor of paediatrics at the University of Bristol and a JCVI member, explained that recommendations regarding medical interventions, such as vaccines, are based on cost-benefit analyses. While the 29 cases in Kent represent an unusually high number, he indicated that the JCVI is unlikely to change its position unless similar events occur repeatedly. The JCVI will continue to employ “evidence-based methods to ensure that NHS resources are used optimally,” acknowledging the distress experienced by those affected.
