Chancellor Friedrich Merz Demands Deportation for Antisemitism

Friedrich Merz called for the deportation of immigrant residents from Islamic nations who fail to uphold Germany’s historical responsibility for the Holocaust. Speaking at a reception for Jewish athletes in Berlin, Merz stated that the nation’s historical accountability applies directly to newcomers from Islamic countries.

The Chancellor’s remarks coincided with a gathering of participants in the Maccabiah, the Jewish Olympic Games held every four years in Israel. A basketball coach told Merz that athletes cannot wear their red Maccabi training jackets featuring the Star of David on German streets without fearing physical attacks. Merz made the remarks with reference to antisemitic offenses committed by Muslim migrants.

Invocation of Richard von Weizsäcker’s 1985 Address

Responding to the security concerns raised by the athletes, Merz cited a famous speech delivered by former Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker before the Bundestag in 1985. Speaking 40 years after the end of the Second World War regarding Nazi crimes and the systematic murder of millions of Jews, Weizsäcker stated that younger generations bear no personal responsibility for past atrocities, but remain accountable for how history shapes the present.

Die Jungen sind nicht verantwortlich für das, was damals geschah. Aber sie sind verantwortlich für das, was in der Geschichte daraus wird, Merz repeated, emphasizing that these sentences remain carved in stone for German society. He added that the principle applies equally to all immigrants entering the country.
