Meta AI Rolls Out Global Parental Controls Amid Teen Safety Scrutiny

Meta is expanding parental supervision tools to the Meta AI app globally, allowing guardians to monitor teen search topics and apply content restrictions as the tech giant faces intense scrutiny over youth mental health. Parents can view the subjects their teenagers have searched for over the past seven days without accessing the underlying text of the conversations.

The update builds upon initial safety announcements made by Meta in April. It comes shortly after a New Mexico judge fined Meta $567 million in August over allegations that Facebook and Instagram were designed to maximize screen time, contributing to a youth mental health crisis.

Meta AI Offers Limited Content Settings for Minors

Guardians seeking stricter parameters can switch the default 13-plus setting to a Limited Content option. This setting narrows the scope of conversations minors can initiate within the Meta AI application.

Meta stated earlier this summer that its systems work with parents and experts to trigger alerts when teens reference self-harm, even in subtle ways. Pew Research data shows that 57% of U.S. teens use chatbots for information searches, while 54% use AI tools for schoolwork.

Industry Skepticism Over Guardrails

Child safety advocates argue that pushing monitoring tools onto families shifts too much accountability away from platform developers. Josh Golin, executive director of the children’s advocacy nonprofit Fairplay, told Mashable that Meta continually burdens parents with monitoring online activity instead of building a safe product from the ground up.

Golin contends that the chatbot’s primary design goal remains focused on driving user engagement. He states that the technology encourages young people to form unhealthy emotional attachments to bots.
