Widow of Tech Billionaire Mike Lynch Faces Potential Bankruptcy After Fraud Ruling
Angela Bacares, the widow of British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch, is facing potential bankruptcy following a High Court ruling in London. The court ordered Bacares to pay over £930 million (approximately $1.2 billion) in damages related to a 2015 lawsuit brought by Hewlett-Packard (HP) concerning the 2011 sale of Lynch’s software firm, Autonomy.

In 2011, HP acquired Autonomy for $11.1 billion. HP later alleged that Autonomy’s financial figures had been fraudulently inflated prior to the sale. The lawsuit claimed HP was owed $944 million, representing the difference between the purchase price and the company’s true value [1].
The Sinking of the ‘Bayesian’ and Lynch’s Death
Mike Lynch, 59, died in August 2024 along with his daughter, Hannah, and five others when their superyacht, Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily [1]. Lynch had been battling the lawsuit brought by HP at the time of his death. He was initially facing criminal charges in the U.S. Related to the Autonomy sale, but was surprisingly acquitted before the yacht tragedy [1].

Lynch left his estate, estimated at $669 million, to his widow, Angela Bacares [1]. Though, the High Court’s ruling may force Bacares into bankruptcy to cover HP’s losses. The Bayesian, originally built as Salute in 2008 by Perini Navi in Italy, was a 56-meter (184 ft) sailing superyacht.
