The Saint-Jean-sur-richelieu Minor Baseball League (LBM) continues to thrive, experiencing significant growth over the past decade and a half. Registrations have doubled from 315 in 2010 to 636 in 2025, a testament to the league’s strong financial health and the dedication of it’s volunteers. Looking ahead to 2026, the LBM anticipates further expansion, fueled in part by the excitement surrounding the Toronto blue Jays (Baseball-Reference).
Growth and Registration Trends
The LBM’s annual general meeting, held on December 10th, highlighted the positive trajectory of the league. President S. Kay Vongprachanh projects a slight increase in player numbers for the 2026 season, with a particular focus on attracting young players aged 5 to 11. the league estimates a total of 665 players will participate in 2026, continuing a pattern of steady, enduring growth.
Historically, the 9U and Rally-Cap categories have been the most popular within the LBM. In 2010, these categories comprised 94 and 74 players respectively. Last season, the Rally-Cap category reached a record high of 165 players, while the 9U category saw 109 participants and the 11U category 90. While younger divisions flourish, the 18U/21U group experienced a slight decrease in registration, falling from 68 to 55 players year-over-year.
Expanding Opportunities for Women in Baseball
A significant success story within the LBM is the progress of its women’s baseball program. In 2025, the league successfully fielded five women’s teams across the 9U, 11U, 13U, and 15U age groups, demonstrating a growing interest in the sport among female athletes.
Season Highlights and Community Involvement
Despite a challenging start to the 2025 season due to inclement weather, favorable conditions ultimately allowed for the smooth operation of league activities with minimal game cancellations. The LBM’s success is heavily reliant on the contributions of its volunteers, who dedicated over 28,000 hours during the 2025 season to coaching, board administration, event organization, and other essential tasks.
Financial stability is also a key component of the LBM’s success. The league has actively recruited new sponsors,bolstering its resources and supporting continued development.
