A Golden Figure Sparks St. Louis Standoff

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway is mounting a challenge against the planned Monday installation of a golden sculpture in St. Louis’ Fox Park. The statue, titled “Witness” by artist Shahzia Sikander, is set to occupy a site nestled between two churches, igniting a sharp debate over public transparency and the intersection of art and religious space.

The placement of the work has drawn particular ire due to its precise location. Hanaway noted that the installation is slated to occur “right between two churches where families gather and worship.”

Hanaway Questions Bureaucratic Silence

The controversy hinges on the opacity of the site selection. Hanaway took to social media to protest what she described as “minimal public notice or opportunity for neighborhood input.” She maintains that local residents are owed a full accounting of how the sculpture was approved for a location immediately adjacent to Christian houses of worship. “Missourians deserve answers about the secrecy and placement, and we intend to get them,” she stated on X.

Artistic Intent Meets Political Provocation

The sculpture itself is a striking, complex piece: a golden female figure with rootlike limbs and braids shaped into ram’s horns, all held within a metal frame. It was featured during a 2024 exhibition at the University of Houston.

Sikander has been explicit about the work’s political origins. She designed the figure to embody the “spirit and grit” of women fighting for bodily autonomy following the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade, even incorporating a collar to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. For the artist, the piece is a monument to bodily autonomy, which she also explored in a companion work titled “NOW.”

Faith Groups Voice Moral Outrage

For many local residents, however, the statue’s proximity to their churches is a provocation. According to reports from mycharisma.com, some neighbors have decried the work as a “demonic affront to faith.” Critics argue that the sculpture’s ties to abortion advocacy make it fundamentally incompatible with the neighborhood, characterizing the placement as a celebration of the destruction of human life near their places of worship.

Theological Critics Warn That the Statue Exalts Human Autonomy

The opposition to the statue extends into theological warnings regarding the public display of such imagery. Commentators have invoked biblical accounts, such as 2 Kings 17:9-12, to describe a “devastating progression” where the erection of sacred images and the serving of idols defiance of divine commands leads to spiritual strongholds. Critics argue that a culture honoring the destruction of human life, which bears the image of God, by placing such a monument near houses of worship, risks exalting human autonomy above divine authority.

The Uncertain Path to Installation

As of late October 2026, the administrative trail behind the sculpture’s approval remains murky. While the installation is still scheduled for Monday, the Attorney General’s office is demanding answers regarding the secrecy of the planning process. It is not yet clear if the state has the legal power to force a relocation or halt the project entirely.
