Umaga Accuses Blues of Undermining Moana Pasifika

Auckland, New Zealand – Moana Pasifika head coach Tana Umaga has publicly accused the Blues of actively working against his team’s success, alleging a deliberate effort to hinder their growth within Super Rugby Pacific. The comments, made ahead of a crucial Auckland derby on Sunday, have ignited a fierce rivalry and raised questions about the future of the expansion franchise.

Rivalry Intensifies Ahead of Derby Clash

The heated exchange comes as Moana Pasifika prepares to face the Blues at Eden Park. Umaga’s strong words suggest a deeper conflict than simply on-field competition. He claims the Blues, his former club where he coached from 2016 to 2018, are unwilling to support or embrace Moana Pasifika for the betterment of rugby in the region.

“They Don’t Want Us Here”

“I don’t understand if they realise there’s two professional rugby teams in this city, but we do know they don’t want us here,” Umaga stated on Thursday. He clarified that his issue isn’t with the Blues’ players or staff, but with the decision-makers within the organization. “The people who make the decisions have made it very hard for us to survive over here,” he added.

Struggles for a Home Base

Moana Pasifika has faced ongoing challenges in establishing a stable home ground. Initially forced out of Mount Smart Stadium in 2020, the team found a temporary base at North Harbour Stadium. However, they are limited to just five games per season at that venue. A planned home game in Tonga recently fell through, and a subsequent attempt to secure Rotorua as a venue was also met with resistance, reportedly due to objections from the Blues regarding territorial boundaries.

Blues Respond to Criticism

Blues chief executive Karl Budge responded to Umaga’s accusations, stating, “Tana was one of my idols growing up and I have a huge amount of respect for him as a player and a coach, and he is entitled to his opinions.” Budge suggested Umaga might be “trying to create a bit of extra spice” ahead of the weekend’s match, and emphasized the positive working relationship between the two clubs in promoting the game.

All Blacks Speculation

Umaga also addressed speculation linking him to a potential role in Dave Rennie’s new All Blacks regime, dismissing the reports as “speculation.” He expressed his support for Rennie’s appointment and acknowledged the challenges facing the national team.

A Fight for Survival

Umaga’s passionate defense of Moana Pasifika underscores the team’s determination to thrive despite the obstacles. He drew parallels to the historical struggles faced by Pacific Islanders, emphasizing the resilience required to succeed in a challenging environment. “It’s nothing new for us, as a small entity, to try to grow and build for the betterment of our people,” he said.

The upcoming match against the Blues takes on added significance, representing not just a sporting contest but a battle for recognition and respect within the Auckland rugby community.
