Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout Sells Out Across Cork After Limited Release
The 8.4% ABV Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout, released in September to celebrate 170 years of brewing at Cork’s Lady’s Well Brewery, has sold out in many locations with remaining supplies limited, Heineken Ireland reported. The special edition brew marks a significant jump in strength from traditional Murphy’s Stout, which sits at 4% ABV. Heineken Ireland created the drink as a once-off celebration of local brewing history, utilizing whiskey barrels at Midleton Distillery for aging.
Brewing Heritage at Lady’s Well Brewery and Midleton Distillery
Brewing commenced at the Lady’s Well Brewery in 1856 after James J. Murphy and his brothers purchased the former Cork Foundling Hospital site, breaking away from their family’s distilling interests. The foundation of that distilling legacy traces back to James Murphy, who founded the Midleton Distillery in 1825 and was the grandfather of James J. Murphy. For this anniversary release, the stout was aged specifically in whiskey barrels at Midleton Distillery, developing a taste profile featuring distinct notes of caramel, vanilla, roast coffee, and dark fruit.
Consumer Demand and Limited Outlet Availability
Heineken Ireland launched the specialty stout across more than 80 outlets in Cork city and county. High consumer interest quickly depleted stocks at numerous venues. Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout is still available in a number of outlets in Cork, but supplies are limited, and some locations have already sold out, due to high consumer interest and demand,
a Heineken Ireland spokesperson told.
Heineken Ireland Position on Future Production
Despite the positive public reception across the county, brewers have confirmed that the release remains strictly a one-time offering. We created Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout as a once-off celebration of 170 years of history, and have seen the hugely positive consumer reaction, however there are no current plans extend its availability,
the Heineken Ireland spokesperson stated.
