Halle Berry reveals Why She Left France after ‘Unwelcomed’ Attention

Halle berry shared a surprising reason for her departure from France during a recent appearance at The New York Times DealBook Summit 2025.The actress explained she felt “unwelcomed” and experienced racial bias while living in the European country.

“I didn’t feel safe in France,” Berry stated, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t feel like I was being treated with respect. I didn’t feel like I was being seen as a woman, as a person.”

Berry, who lived in France for several years with her now-ex-husband Olivier Martinez and their son Maceo, elaborated on the subtle but pervasive discrimination she faced. She described instances where she was constantly stared at and felt like an outsider.

“It was a lot of little things that built up over time,” she explained. “It was the stares, the whispers, the feeling of being different. It was the feeling of not being accepted.”

The Oscar winner noted that while she loves france and its culture, she ultimately decided to return to the United States for the sake of her son. “I wanted Maceo to grow up in a place where he felt safe and accepted,” she said. “I wanted him to grow up in a place where he could be proud of who he is.”

Berry’s candid remarks sparked conversation about the realities of racial bias and the challenges faced by Black Americans living abroad. The actress has been vocal about her experiences with discrimination throughout her career and continues to use her platform to advocate for equality and inclusion.
