Nancy, France Mobilizes for Colon Cancer Awareness During “Blue March”

Nancy, France is gearing up for its annual “Blue March” campaign throughout March 2026, a dedicated effort to raise awareness about colon cancer, a prevalent yet often preventable disease. The initiative, a collaboration between the CHRU de Nancy (University Hospital of Nancy) and Les Vitrines de Nancy, aims to educate the public and encourage participation in early screening programs.

Colon Cancer: A Significant Health Concern

Colon cancer is a major health issue, affecting approximately one in 30 French individuals during their lifetime. With over 47,000 new cases diagnosed annually in France, it ranks as the second most common cancer in women and the third in men. Early detection is crucial, as the disease is curable in up to 90% of cases when identified early.

“Blue March” Events in Nancy

A series of events are planned throughout March to promote awareness and encourage screening:

  • March 4: Conference-Debate “Move your colon” – A conference and discussion led by hepato-gastroenterology specialists from the CHRU de Nancy at the Nancy Museum-Aquarium. The event will cover preventative measures, treatment advancements and patient experiences.
  • March 7: Prevention Stand at SLUC Nancy Basket Game – Health professionals from the CHRU de Nancy will host a prevention stand during the SLUC Nancy Basket vs. Chalon-Sur-Saône basketball game, offering information and a raffle.
  • March 17: Prevention Village at Louis Mathieu Institute – A prevention village will be set up at the Louis Mathieu Institute, bringing together organizations like the League Against Cancer and the CRCDC, with professionals from the CHRU de Nancy providing information on nutrition, addiction, and tobacco cessation.
  • March 21: “Nature Course” and Walk in Ludres – Organized by the ALTER association, this event combines physical activity with cancer awareness.
  • March 27: Blue Walk/Run and Prevention Village in Ludres – A walk/run event accompanied by a prevention village, featuring professionals from the CHRU de Nancy.
  • March 28 & 29: Equestrian Show – The Ménil Saint-Michel troupe will present a show themed around “Blue March,” with the participation of CHRU de Nancy professionals, to raise awareness about colon cancer screening.

Supporting Cancer Research with “Chatty Biscuits”

Les Vitrines de Nancy and its member merchants are partnering with local biscuit maker Marinette to sell “chatty biscuits” (biscuits bavards) for €6.95. Marinette, known for its artisanal and customizable biscuits, is providing the treats. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Cancerology Federation of the Nancy CHRU to support cancer prevention efforts.

The Importance of Screening and Healthy Lifestyle

A national screening program is available in France for individuals aged 50 to 74, offering a free, painless, and effective immunological test every two years, fully covered by Health Insurance. Despite this, participation rates remain around 33%. The CHRU de Nancy emphasizes that adopting a healthy lifestyle – including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and limiting alcohol and tobacco consumption – can significantly reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.

Nancy’s Commitment to Community Health

The “Blue March” initiative demonstrates Nancy’s dedication to community health and proactive cancer prevention. By combining awareness events with fundraising efforts, the campaign aims to empower residents to take control of their health and seek early screening when appropriate.
