Nepal-China Border Floods: Death Toll Exceeds 600 as Rescue Efforts Continue

Casualty Figures and Discrepancies in Official Data

Official reporting indicates a massive divergence in figures released by regional governments. According to Nepal’s disaster agency cited by the Associated Press, the nation’s death toll reached 669, with 2,426 people missing. In contrast, Chinese authorities reported seven deaths and more than 550 missing persons in Tibet. Despite the logistical challenges posed by continuous rain, Nepali authorities confirmed that more than 3,700 people have been successfully rescued.

Relief and Evacuation Efforts in Nuwakot and Trishuli

In Nuwakot, one of the districts hit hardest by the late-August flash floods, army helicopters delivered boxes and bags of emergency aid, including rice, instant noodles, crackers, and clothing. According to the Associated Press, returning aircraft transported survivors to safety, where soldiers assisted elderly residents and carried infants evacuated from the nearby community of Trishuli to medical tents.

While evacuations continued, some residents ventured back into devastated villages to salvage personal belongings. Shoba Shretha returned to Trishuli and located her dog, Sweetie, whom she was forced to leave behind when the floodwaters struck, according to the Associated Press. Shortly after, relief coordinators cleared villagers and volunteers from the area to allow heavy excavation equipment to enter the damaged settlement.

Families Search Hospitals in Kathmandu

In Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, friends and relatives gathered outside the main government hospital starting early Saturday morning to search for missing relatives, according to the Associated Press. People shuffled between help desks and notice boards, scanning patient lists and clutching photographs.

Dil Maya Lama traveled 130 kilometers from Ramechhap to search for her 26-year-old brother, a hydropower company driver in Rasuwa, who remains missing. Nelza Moktan also sought information regarding her cousin, who worked as a driver in the same district. “I feel hopeless. It has already been four days,” Moktan told the Associated Press.
